Canary Islands parliamentary group calls for increased judicial resources
Jesús Ramos, deputy spokesperson for the Agrupación Socialista Gomera (ASG) parliamentary group, has called for increased resources and closer judicial attention across the Canary Islands. Speaking during the presentation of the 2025 Prosecutor's Report in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Ramos highlighted rising litigation rates and infrastructure deficiencies.
Data from the report shows a 3.3% increase in preliminary proceedings in 2025 compared to 2024, with an 18.4% increase since the start of the 2023 legislature. Ramos specifically noted a 42% rise in sexual assault cases against minors under 16, increasing from 332 to 472 cases. He emphasized the need for better prevention, early detection, and specialized assistance.
While acknowledging progress in personnel and modernization, Ramos warned that current resources remain insufficient due to staff shortages, high prosecutor turnover, and the need for urgent facility improvements. He also called for enhanced support for victims of gender-based violence.
