Canary Islands seeks EU support for regional funds and housing regulation

Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo is traveling to Dublin to seek Irish support for key European Union negotiations. A primary objective is securing the continuity of specific funds for outermost regions (RUP) under Article 349 of the EU Treaty during the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework, as current proposals suggest a shift toward nationalized aid management.

Clavijo is also addressing the regional housing crisis. He is proposing the designation of ‘saturated zones’ (rather than the state-level term ‘stressed zones’) to implement measures that could limit property purchases by non-residents in high-demand areas like Las Canteras. This strategy aims to prioritize residents and manage the impact of tourism on local housing availability.

Domestically, political groups such as Podemos Canarias are demanding that the regional government take more concrete action, including the declaration of stressed market areas, to respond to growing social unrest and protests regarding housing accessibility.
