Canary Islands President warns of escalating migration crisis

Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo has called for a coordinated ‘state response’ to address the growing risk of a migration crisis. In recent statements, Clavijo warned that the deteriorating situation in the Sahel region could further destabilize Europe’s southern border.

Clavijo criticized both the Spanish central government and the European Union for failing to react with sufficient decisiveness. He noted that the current stability in migration routes is fragile and heavily dependent on Morocco’s willingness to contain departures. He warned that any shift in Rabat’s policy could lead to a surge in migrant arrivals to the archipelago that exceeds current levels.

Furthermore, the President argued that European policy focuses too heavily on containment rather than addressing the root causes of migration, such as the lack of economic prospects in Africa. He called for a fundamental debate regarding African policy within Spain and the EU.
