Canary Islands processes over 4,000 protected housing units

The Canary Islands has processed over 4,000 protected housing units since the start of the current legislature. This includes 200 provisional qualification requests, signaling an increase in developer activity compared to previous years.

The regional government attributes this growth to recent reforms designed to facilitate both public and private construction, reduce administrative hurdles, and increase land availability. Key measures include new decrees aimed at shortening procedures and enhancing legal certainty. Additionally, the government has updated the Canarian Basic Module to account for rising construction costs.

Pablo Rodríguez, the Minister of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility, stated that these figures indicate a sector reactivation. The regional strategy also involves increasing the number of public housing units and transitioning from a lottery-based allocation system to one based on social, economic, and family criteria via the Visor de Vivienda Canaria.
