Canary Islands push to become EU freeport under delegate Gabriel Corujo
Gabriel Corujo, the special delegate of the Gran Canaria Free Trade Zone, has called for the entire Canary Islands archipelago to be designated as a freeport. He argues that the islands can expand knowledge‑based exports, citing examples such as video‑game and series production for California firms and pharmaceutical services for German companies. Corujo says a freeport would simplify bureaucracy, lower logistics costs and make the islands a reliable partner for international investment.
He highlights existing advantages of the current free‑trade regime, including tax‑free storage of goods and the broader Economic and Fiscal Regime that already attracts more ships and improves security. Plans are under way to boost staffing and technology, and he suggests cooperation with nearby zones such as Madeira to further strengthen logistics and offer a backup hub for African ports.
