Canary Islands renewable electricity share rises as solar output surges

In 2025 the Canary Islands recorded their highest ever production of electricity from renewable sources, yet 79.2% of total generation still came from fossil fuels. Solar photovoltaic output grew 14% year‑on‑year, driving the overall renewable increase of 1.03% while wind contributed 15.3% of the renewable mix, down 2.6% from the previous year. The islands showed large internal differences: El Hierro reached 43.5% renewable generation, whereas La Palma and La Gomera recorded only 7.7% and 11% respectively.

Following the activation of a new inter‑island electrical link on 1 July, La Gomera’s wind farms were able to cover the island’s entire electricity demand on several days in July, injecting more than 9 MW into the grid. The connection, a 66‑kV, 50 MW double‑circuit line between the Chío substation on Tenerife and El Palmar on La Gomera, cost over €145 million and eliminates the previously isolated operation of La Gomera, enhancing supply stability and allowing greater renewable penetration.
