Spanish Social Security pension expenditure reached a record 14,498.2 million euros in September, marking a 6.3% increase compared to the same month in 2025. This rise is driven by a growing number of beneficiaries, which now exceeds 9.5 million, and higher benefit amounts due to recent reforms.

The average monthly pension across the system rose by 4.6% to 1,374.6 euros. Retirement pensions, which constitute approximately 73.5% of the total expenditure, averaged 1,576.1 euros. The 2026 revaluation included a 2.7% increase, aligned with the average inflation rate from late 2024 to late 2025.

Regional data shows significant variation. In the Basque Country, average pensions reached 1,685.58 euros, while in Extremadura, they were notably lower at 1,174.87 euros. A study by DataPulse Research indicates that the average annual gross pension in Spain (19,844 euros) slightly exceeds the estimated annual cost of living for a retiree (19,349 euros), a trend shared by only a few other European nations.
