Canary Islands review rare disease strategy and registry

The Canary Islands Health Ministry has met with patient associations to review the progress of the Canary Islands Rare Disease Strategy 2023-2026. The meeting, held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, aimed to monitor implemented actions and adjust to the needs identified by patients and their families.

The Canary Islands Primary Care registry for rare diseases currently includes approximately 98,000 individuals. This figure encompasses both patients with confirmed diagnoses and those with clinical suspicions of rare pathologies. The registry serves as a vital tool for healthcare planning and improving patient identification.

Effective care relies on coordination between primary and hospital-level care to facilitate specialized clinical reports and interconsultations. The strategy is being deployed through seven strategic lines, 16 projects, and 64 specific measures to provide comprehensive and continuous responses to affected populations.
