Canary Islands tax revenue rises 14.8% amid economic moderation

The Canary Islands have experienced significant economic activity, marked by a 14.8% increase in state tax revenue during the first half of the year. Total tax collections reached approximately 1,983 million euros between January and June, representing the fourth-highest growth rate among all Spanish autonomous communities. Personal Income Tax (IRPF) was the primary driver, contributing 1,457 million euros.

Despite this revenue growth, the region faces economic challenges. Inflation in the islands reached 3.4% in June, prompting local calls for updates to income tax to alleviate pressure on middle and low-income households. Additionally, tax refunds in the archipelago increased by 9.5%, contrasting with a national decrease.

Economic reports indicate a moderation in growth following several years of high activity. While the regional GDP grew by 2.9% year-on-year in the second quarter—surpassing the national average of 2.7%—the growth gap between the Canary Islands and mainland Spain is narrowing. The Chamber of Commerce of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has emphasized that regional competitiveness will be essential for sustaining future growth and transforming wealth into quality employment and improved public services.
