Canary Islands to add residence allowance update for 90,000 public workers

President Fernando Clavijo met with UGT Canary Islands officials to discuss incorporating an update to the residence indemnity for public employees into the regional Decreto Canarias. The proposal targets between 80,000 and 90,000 civil servants stationed in the archipelago, arguing that a national decision applied elsewhere would be unfair for the islands. The government plans to forward the request to the ministries of Territorial Policy and Finance for negotiation in the coming weeks, seeking to extend the update to staff transferred from health, education and justice services as well. Union leader Francisco Bautista emphasized the need to preserve the islands’ ultra‑peripheral status while improving the allowance, and the regional administration pledged to review other aspects of the complement to make the Canary Islands more attractive for public staff.
