Canary Islands to advocate for border region influence in EU migration policy

The Government of the Canary Islands is pushing for border regions to play a more active role in the design and implementation of European migration policies. This initiative will be presented at the upcoming meeting of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions (CRPM) in Brussels.

Octavio Caraballo, Deputy Counselor of the Presidency Cabinet, will defend the proposal, which aims to elevate conclusions from a recent migration working group to major European institutions. The goal is to ensure that the firsthand experience of territories facing direct migratory flows and the challenges of the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum is integrated into future policy-making. Caraballo emphasized that these regions possess direct knowledge of the difficulties and needs regarding migration management, and called for improved coordination between administrations.
