Canary Islands to implement new camping and motorhome regulations

The Canary Islands government is nearing the adoption of a new regulation to govern outdoor tourist accommodations, including motorhomes, caravans, and similar vehicles. The draft regulation, prepared by the Canarian Tourism Ministry, has been submitted to the Canarian Consultative Council for review before final approval by the Government Council.

A key feature of the proposed law is a ban on free or wild camping, which would create a uniform regional standard across the islands. While some islands, such as Fuerteventura, already have camping bans in place, this new legislation would apply a consistent framework throughout the archipelago.

Under the new rules, camping sites must meet specific infrastructure requirements, including a reception area, designated vehicle pitches, and sanitary facilities with water supply and sewage disposal. Municipalities will be granted a five-year transition period to establish temporary areas for motorhomes and similar vehicles. The regulation is expected to come into effect in September 2026.
