Canary Islands updates flood emergency protection plan

The Government of the Canary Islands has approved an update to the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Response to Flood Risk (PEINCA). This modification updates Annex III, which identifies areas of significant potential flood risk.

As part of the update, nine coastal risk areas have been removed from the list. These include Playa de Melenara, Pasito Blanco, Balito, Puerto Rico, and Caleta de Soria in Gran Canaria; Puerto Tahiche and Pedro Barba in Lanzarote; and San Miguel de Tajao and Los Gigantes in Tenerife. Additionally, the plan modifies a fluvial risk area in La Gomera, expanding the delimitation for the San Sebastián ravine.

Manuel Miranda, the Minister of Territorial Policy, Cohesion, and Water, stated that the update ensures civil protection efforts are coordinated with current hydrological risk management plans. This periodic revision allows for a more recent risk assessment to improve emergency responses.
