Canary Islands updates Land Law and coordinates urban projects

The Government of the Canary Islands has approved the final text of the updated Land and Natural Spaces Law. A key feature of this legislative update is the increase in land availability for public housing. Under the new proposal, the allocation for public housing in developable land could rise from 30% to 40%, while in consolidated urban land, it could increase from 10% to 20%.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the City Council has initiated the drafting of the Paseo del Guiniguada project, a €1.68 million urban transformation aimed at creating pedestrian and green spaces in the corridor between Vegueta and Triana. However, because the GC-110 road within the project area is classified as a regional interest road, the Canary Islands Government maintains jurisdiction and must grant final approval for the project to proceed.

The Land Law update, presented by Minister Manuel Miranda, aims to address housing, demographic, and climate change challenges. The text will now move to the Parliament of the Canary Islands for further processing.
