Canary Islands urban landscape shows significant age variations

Data from the Cadastre reveals significant variations in the age of the urban landscape across the Canary Islands. While islands with lower demographic growth, such as El Hierro, La Gomera, and La Palma, maintain urban structures largely built before 1970, tourist hubs and capital cities show much more recent expansion.

In El Hierro, 30.3% of the dated urban units were constructed before 1970, nearly double the archipelago's average. Across the entire archipelago, 1,538,537 urban units are recorded, with 15.5% (239,154 units) predating 1970. The majority of the Canary Islands' urban fabric was established during the second half of the 20th century and the early decades of the 21st century, particularly in Fuerteventura and parts of Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria.
