Canary Islands wave alert issued as UK warns of malaria risk in 13 countries

The Canary Islands government activated a coastal pre‑alert for Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro after forecasts of north‑easterly winds reaching Force 7 (50‑61 km/h). Combined waves of two to three metres and strong currents were expected, prompting safety warnings for tourists and an aborted landing at Lanzarote Airport that was later completed safely.

Separately, the UK Foreign Office, via Travel Health Pro and the UK Health Security Agency, released a new travel health alert covering 13 destinations—including Belize, Botswana, the Dominican Republic, Eswatini, French Guiana, India, Myanmar, Namibia, Papua New Guinea, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea and Sudan—after a series of UK malaria deaths. The agency reported 2,004 imported malaria cases in 2023 and 557 cases from January to May 2026, urging travellers to take appropriate antimalarial medication and be aware of severe symptoms.
