Canary Islands face severe weather warnings due to DANA

The Canary Islands are experiencing significant meteorological instability caused by a high-level isolated depression, known as a DANA. This weather system has triggered widespread rain warnings across the archipelago.

As of October 21, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued yellow warnings for all islands, with forecasts of intense showers and thunderstorms. Some areas may see accumulations of 15 mm per hour or up to 60 mm over a 12-hour period.

The situation is expected to intensify on Thursday, October 22, with orange alerts—indicating significant danger—forecast for El Hierro, La Gomera, and the eastern slopes of La Palma. In these specific zones, rainfall could reach 30 mm in a single hour and up to 100 mm over 12 hours.

The Canary Islands Government has activated emergency protocols and pre-alerts to manage the risks associated with these heavy rains and potential flooding.
