An 18-year-old man is under investigation for allegedly attempting to asphyxiate his 11-year-old sister in Canatlán, Durango, after she refused to lend him a cell phone.
The incident occurred on a Sunday morning in the San Diego neighborhood. According to the children's 37-year-old mother, the young man reacted violently to his sister's refusal, grabbing her neck and making it difficult for her to breathe. The mother intervened and called emergency services.
Red Cross medical technicians provided pre-hospital care before the girl was transported to the Hospital Integral de Canatlán. Medical staff diagnosed her with a first-degree cervical sprain. Following the hospital's notification to ministerial authorities, the Investigative Police of Crimes arrived to begin inquiries.
The mother reported that the suspect's whereabouts are currently unknown and noted that he has exhibited violent behavior in the past, which she linked to suspected substance abuse. The State Attorney General's Office of Durango has initiated proceedings to establish legal responsibilities.
