Canberra Airport proposes new stadium at Commonwealth Park
Canberra Airport has proposed the construction of a new 25,000-seat covered stadium at Commonwealth Park to revitalise the city centre. The project, which includes a capacity of up to 36,000 for major concerts, is intended to serve as a hub for sporting events, international music tours, and cultural activities.
The proposed site is located on Commonwealth land at Regatta Place, encompassing the current Archbishop’s House and adjacent parking areas. The Airport is currently in discussions with the Catholic Church regarding the land use.
Inspired by the Te Kaha Stadium in Christchurch, the proposal emphasizes accessibility via the existing light rail network and proximity to local hospitality and accommodation. Airport CEO Stephen Byron described the project as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to provide the National Capital with a venue that matches its status and ambitions.
