Canberra community groups protest water park lease and land remediation fund

In Canberra, the community group ‘Save Big Splash’ has criticized a plan to meet lease obligations at the Macquarie water park site by opening an unlicensed family restaurant. While the site was intended to reopen as a public pool by November 1, Access Canberra stated that operating a restaurant would satisfy the Crown lease requirements, which permit an aquatic facility, an indoor sports facility, or an unlicensed family restaurant. Planning Minister Chris Steel has announced a year-long options study for the site.

In southern New South Wales, a $1 million fund intended to remediate lead-contaminated land in Captains Flat is facing criticism regarding its implementation. Local officials from the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council have called for fresh community consultation and simplified requirements. Councillors noted that residents are struggling to navigate the complex application processes required to access the grants for voluntary remediation works following historical mining contamination.
