Canberra Liberals demand ACT procurement reforms and debate self-government

The Canberra Liberals are calling for a major overhaul of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) procurement processes, alleging that current policies have “institutionalised” privileged access for unions. Party leader Mark Parton is demanding the abolition of the Secure Local Jobs Code, the UnionsACT MoU, and the Ethical Treatment of Workers Evaluation Direction, arguing these mechanisms allow special interests to influence live tenders.

This push follows scrutiny from the Integrity Commissioner regarding the 2019 Campbell Primary School tender, which allegedly involved pressure from the CFMEU. The Liberals are also advocating for mandatory full disclosure of any external attempts to influence procurement outcomes to ensure fair competition.

Separately, political debate has emerged regarding the ACT's self-government system. Canberra Liberals Senate candidate Nick Tyrrell has supported a review of the Self-Government Act, citing concerns over nearly $2 billion in territory debt. Tyrrell suggested that if the territory were managed like a local council, it would face dismissal for financial mismanagement. However, ACT Opposition Leader Mark Parton has declined to support the review, questioning the territory's financial stability and its ability to function independently.
