Canberra music venue Shadows closes amid hospitality crisis
The closure of the Civic nightclub and live music venue Shadows has highlighted a growing crisis within Canberra’s hospitality and music sectors. Owned by Andrew Heaney, Shadows served as a platform for emerging performers, DJs, and comedians for approximately two years.
The venue's closure is part of a broader trend of hospitality businesses shutting down in the capital, including establishments such as Queenies, Onzieme, and Wild Duck Fine Asian Cuisine. Operators cite several contributing factors to these closures, including rising operational costs, building maintenance disputes, city construction, limited parking, and competition from large hospitality groups.
While some view these as private business failures, there are calls for the ACT government to provide support through targeted grants, rent relief during construction, and improved public transport to sustain the city's nightlife and grassroots music scene.
