Canberra principal resigns after dispute over LGBTQIA+ awareness day
Janelle Rowe, a veteran educator with 34 years of experience, has resigned from her position as a primary school principal in Canberra following a dispute over the school’s participation in ‘Wear It Purple Day’. The event, which aims to support LGBTQIA+ students and foster inclusive environments, became a point of contention when Rowe attempted to replace it with an anti-bullying week.
Rowe argued that the activity was not a ‘harmless dress-up day’ but rather required teachers to explain sexualized topics to children aged four to twelve. She stated that discussions regarding these lifestyles should remain the responsibility of parents and families rather than schools.
Following her decision to oppose the event, Rowe claims she faced disciplinary proceedings and vague allegations regarding her professional conduct. Her legal counsel noted that internal documents previously described her as an ‘outstanding’ and ‘highly capable’ leader. The ACT education authorities have declined to comment on the specific details of her case, citing privacy concerns.
