Canberra stadium proposal sparks debate over multi-sport utility

A proposal for a new 30,000-seat stadium on the north shore of Lake Burley Griffin has triggered a debate regarding its commercial design and intended use. The project, which aims for completion by 2030, is intended to replace the 48-year-old GIO Stadium, currently home to the Canberra Raiders and ACT Brumbies.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr has advocated for a multi-purpose design that accommodates Australian rules football (AFL) and cricket alongside rectangular sports. Barr argues that a hybrid configuration would maximize economic viability by adding at least 12 additional events per year.

However, sporting administrators and stakeholders have expressed concerns. Critics argue that a hybrid oval-rectangular model could compromise the playing surface and dilute the spectator experience for rugby league, rugby union, and football fans. Additionally, officials have noted that attempting to accommodate both formats could increase the stadium's footprint, potentially impacting Commonwealth Park and increasing overall costs.
