Canberra to Host NBL Ignite Cup Finals and Boost Expansion Prospects

The National Basketball League (NBL) announced that the Ignite Cup Finals will be staged in Canberra's AIS Arena on February 19‑21, with semi‑finals on Friday and a decisive final on Sunday. The four‑team finals will compete for a $550,000 prize pool, the largest in league history, and the Andrew Gaze MVP Awards will be presented in the Great Hall of Parliament House. The move follows a new partnership with the ACT Government, which has pledged $31.1 million for the National Convention and Entertainment Centre and aims to grow visitor spend by $1 billion by 2030.

The finals are seen as a stepping‑stone toward a possible Canberra NBL franchise, the first in the capital since the Canberra Cannons left in 2003. League officials are exploring expansion to Canberra, Darwin, the Gold Coast and a second Sydney team, with new clubs required to host at least 8,000 spectators. NBL Group CEO David Stevenson called the Ignite Cup “a standout innovation” and praised Canberra’s appetite for elite basketball, while ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr described the event as a strategic investment supporting the government’s election commitment to bring top‑level men’s basketball back to the city.
