Cancela road junction works expected to finish in October

Construction of the new Cancela road junction in Madeira is entering its final phase, with full completion expected in October. The project aims to improve traffic flow and distribution, particularly during peak hours.

The works, which began in October 2023, involved significant structural changes, including the replacement of existing junctions with an asymmetrical elongated roundabout to the north of the VR1 and a new rotary intersection, known as Rotunda Sul, to the south. The project experienced some suspensions between January and March 2025, with partial suspensions regarding the widening of the Quinta Bridge deck lasting until September 2025.

The contract was awarded to AFAVIAS – Engenharia e Construções, S. A. for a total cost of approximately 2.9 million euros, including VAT. Regional Government President Miguel Albuquerque is scheduled to visit the site to inspect the progress.
