Cancer awareness month initiatives promote regular screenings and early detection

September is designated as cancer awareness and prevention month, with a focus on promoting regular screenings. In Akita, national conventions are being held to advocate for early detection and correct medical knowledge under the slogan, “Regular cancer screenings are an investment in oneself.”

In Wakayama Prefecture, local authorities are launching awareness campaigns in collaboration with financial institutions, life insurance companies, and economic organizations. The prefecture aims to improve screening rates, which currently fall below the national average for the five major types of cancer. Data indicates that in Wakayama, approximately 8,400 people are diagnosed with cancer annually, with one in three individuals aged 40 to 60 affected. Common types include colorectal, lung, stomach, prostate, and breast cancer.

To support public education, a campaign sponsored by Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company is offering free copies of cancer prevention manuals—specifically designed for the working generation and working women—to hospitals, pharmacies, and non-profit organizations. These resources aim to help individuals understand standard medical care and prepare for potential diagnoses.
