Cancer immunotherapy research advances with protein blocking and immune memory repurposing
Researchers are exploring new methods to enhance immunotherapy effectiveness against cancer. In Argentina, a research team identified that blocking the SMYD2 protein can improve the immune response in patients with hepatocarcinoma, an aggressive form of liver cancer. By inhibiting this protein, cancer cells become more visible to lymphocytes, potentially overcoming the tumor's ability to evade the immune system. These preclinical results offer hope for improving treatment outcomes for this high-mortality cancer.
In the United States, a collaborative effort involving Celloram, Case Western Reserve University, and University Hospitals has developed PROTEXI. This platform aims to repurpose the immune memory generated by COVID-19 vaccinations or infections to target tumors. The approach utilizes T-cells trained to recognize the coronavirus spike protein to attack cancer cells. While these findings have currently only been demonstrated in mouse models, the technology seeks to address the challenge of 'cold tumors' that typically evade immune detection.
