Cancer patients in the Netherlands highlight research and personal resilience
Individual patient experiences and local fundraising efforts highlight ongoing developments in cancer treatment and research in the Netherlands.
Heleen Bijl, diagnosed with melanoma in 2018, combined regular medical care at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital with lifestyle and nutritional adjustments. Following surgeries and medical interventions, she emphasizes the importance of finding a supportive environment for those facing a cancer diagnosis.
In another instance, Huibert Roost is participating in the ‘Klimmen tegen Kanker’ initiative to raise funds for the Catharina Health Foundation. Roost, a rectal cancer patient at Catharina Ziekenhuis, is participating in a cycling challenge to support oncological research. He is specifically involved in the deMEND-IT study, which investigates whether intensive pre-treatment with chemotherapy and radiation can allow patients with severe rectal cancer to qualify for organ-sparing treatments. His daughter, Benke, also contributes to the medical field as a researcher on the same study.
