Cancer Treatment Breakthrough and Chile's GES Expansion Plan

Researchers at the International University of Florida have engineered a sugar‑based “shield” on CAR‑T cells that improves their resistance to tumor‑induced suppression. In animal tests, the modified cells doubled survival time compared with standard CAR‑T therapy, suggesting a potential way to lower the high cost of the treatment.

In Chile, the Ministry of Health is moving to extend the Garantías Explícitas en Salud (GES) program to cover all types of cancer. Officials say the expansion will require increased diagnostic capacity, more specialists, upgraded equipment, and additional funding to ensure timely care from suspicion through treatment.

Both developments aim to enhance cancer outcomes: the Florida study by improving immunotherapy effectiveness, and the Chilean policy by guaranteeing comprehensive, timely access to cancer care.
