Cancer treatment complications pose long-term risks for survivors
Medical researchers and clinicians are addressing long-term complications arising from cancer treatments, specifically radiation necrosis and secondary malignancies.
At the SNO ASCO CNS Metastases Conference, Ayal Aizer of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute identified radiation necrosis as a primary challenge in stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for brain metastases. As systemic therapies extend patient survival, the risk of necrosis—a treatment-related complication occurring after successful tumor control—has become more prevalent. Clinicians must now distinguish between patients with difficult-to-control tumors and those who develop necrosis as a downstream effect of successful treatment.
Separately, a retrospective study of Hodgkin lymphoma survivors highlights the risk of iatrogenic secondary neoplasms. Following a median of 12 years, researchers found that secondary cancers accounted for 15 percent of deaths in the studied group. Radiation therapy was linked to increased risks of site-specific malignancies, including breast, colorectal, and lung cancers, as well as hematological complications like non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia. Current guidelines recommend specific surveillance protocols to detect these late-onset complications early.
