Cancino Adentro residents report surge in robberies and police resource shortages
Residents and business owners in the Cancino Adentro sector of Santo Domingo Este are reporting a significant increase in armed robberies and muggings. The surge in crime has forced community members to alter their daily routines, including commuting to work and running essential errands, due to the constant risk of violence.
Local leaders, including Julio Terrero, have criticized the inadequacy of the local police precinct. They report that the station lacks the necessary resources to respond to emergencies effectively. Specifically, the community noted that the precinct’s only motorcycle suffers from frequent mechanical failures, and the assigned pickup truck has been out of service for over two months due to repairs.
In a recent incident, armed individuals robbed a minimarket on Duarte Street, seizing all available cash. In response to the growing insecurity, residents are calling on the Ministry of Interior and Police and the National Police to urgently assign new vehicles and increase the number of officers patrolling the area.
