Cancún and Cozumel implement environmental conservation measures
Environmental conservation efforts are underway in the Mexican Caribbean to protect coastal ecosystems. In Cancún and Puerto Morelos, hotels are implementing a reforestation strategy to combat beach erosion and the impact of sargassum. The initiative involves using approximately 15 native plant species, such as sea lily and rosemary, to stabilize sand dunes. To ensure a steady supply of vegetation, some establishments, including Temptation Cancún Resort, Desire Riviera Maya, and Pearl, have invested 800,000 pesos to establish internal nurseries and irrigation systems using treated water.
Simultaneously, the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) has implemented a temporary tourism ban for October and November in the Cozumel Reef National Park. Access to specific polygons, including San Francisco and Santa Rosa, has been restricted to reduce human pressure and allow coral colonies to recover from diseases like white syndrome. This measure aims to preserve the marine ecosystems that support local diving and snorkeling activities.
