Cancún authorities confirm rabies in gray fox after attack on infant

Health authorities in Cancún, Quintana Roo, have confirmed the presence of the rabies virus in a gray fox found in a supermarket parking lot on Kabah Avenue. The animal was captured and euthanized to facilitate laboratory testing.

A one-year-old girl was scratched by the fox on October 3, 2026. She received immediate medical attention and the rabies vaccine, and is reported to be in good health. Authorities confirmed there are currently no registered cases of human rabies in Quintana Roo related to this incident.

The Quintana Roo Ministry of Health has issued an alert for anyone who may have had physical contact with the fox, including bites, scratches, or pets that approached the animal. Officials advise anyone potentially exposed to seek medical guidance immediately. The public is urged to avoid contact with wildlife and to report any suspicious animals to the appropriate authorities.
