Cancún authorities report multiple arrests and corruption allegations
Law enforcement and political figures in Quintana Roo are addressing several distinct issues in the Cancún region. The PAN political party is calling for the elimination of the 'Visitax' tourist tax, citing a lack of transparency regarding the use of funds and potential negative impacts on tourism competitiveness.
Simultaneously, Uber drivers have filed complaints alleging a corruption scheme at the Cancún International Airport. Drivers claim that members of the National Guard have been soliciting periodic payments to allow ride-sharing services to operate within the terminal.
In separate criminal investigations, the State Attorney General's Office has reported several significant arrests. Three individuals were detained in connection with five violent incidents, including multiple homicides and an attack in the Los Corales neighborhood. Additionally, authorities arrested a suspect in connection with a disappearance in Chetumal and three Colombian nationals allegedly involved in 'Gota a Gota' predatory lending operations. Local transit officers are also under investigation following allegations of attempted extortion against a motorist.
