Cancún flight overbooking: passenger rights and compensation

In Mexico, airlines are permitted to sell more tickets than available seats on an aircraft, a practice known as overbooking. This occurs when companies anticipate that some passengers will not show up for their flights.

When overbooking results in a passenger with a confirmed reservation being unable to board, the airline remains responsible. Under the Civil Aviation Law, affected passengers have specific rights, which may include receiving a 25% indemnity.

At the Cancún International Airport, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) provides guidance and conciliation services through a dedicated service module to assist travelers facing these issues.
