Cancún hospital performs first robot-assisted surgeries in Quintana Roo
The Hospital General de Cancún “Jesús Kumate Rodríguez” has successfully performed the first robot-assisted surgeries in the state of Quintana Roo. The inaugural procedures consisted of laparoscopic cholecystectomies, which are minimally invasive surgeries used to remove the gallbladder.
The operations utilized the Versius robotic system, developed by the British company CMR Surgical. This technology provides surgeons with three-dimensional vision, enhanced depth perception, and a greater range of motion compared to traditional laparoscopy. The system allows the surgeon to control robotic arms from a specialized console, which can help reduce physical fatigue and involuntary tremors during complex procedures.
Dr. María de los Ángeles Martínez Ferretiz led the initial interventions. She is noted as the first woman in the Yucatán Peninsula and the second woman in Mexico certified to operate this specific robotic platform. With this implementation, the hospital joins a select group of only five public health institutions in Mexico currently utilizing the Versius system, alongside facilities in Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Yucatán.
