Cancún International Airport faces infrastructure issues and declining passenger numbers

Workers at Cancún International Airport (AIC) are reporting a decline in passenger numbers and deteriorating infrastructure, despite expansion plans announced by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur). While Asur intends to expand Terminals 1 and 4 to increase annual capacity from 35 million to 45 million passengers, employees claim they are seeing fewer operations and a significant reduction in workload.

Staff members have raised concerns regarding the physical state of the facilities, noting visible deterioration and leaks in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 during light rain. Additionally, workers highlighted a lack of adequate common areas for staff to eat or rest. Some travelers have also suggested that personnel could benefit from improved customer service training.

Despite these internal reports, Asur maintains that Cancún remains a primary gateway for international tourism in Mexico. The company’s recent financial reports show significant revenue growth, and it has recently expanded its international footprint through the acquisition of 20 airports across Latin America, including Brazil, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Curacao.
