Cancún families seek public high school placements

Families in Cancún have begun gathering in long lines to secure spots for their children in public high schools following a shortage of placements during the initial enrollment phase. To manage the high demand, the Secretaría de Educación de Quintana Roo (SEQ) has implemented a system of 1,339 vouchers to organize the reassignment process, which offers approximately 1,400 available spaces across various institutions.

Marbella Echeverría, director of Teacher Training Institutions for the Northern Zone, noted that the process has seen unusual activity, with parents arriving in the early morning hours. The reassignment process for previously registered students is scheduled to continue until August 13. On August 14, authorities will attend to students who did not register online and those transferring from other states.

Available educational options include modular or Saturday programs at campuses such as Cecyte 1 and 2, and Bachilleres 1, 2, and 4. Additionally, a new school modality, Bachillerato Nacional Margarita Maza, will operate at two locations in Cancún. Officials acknowledged the difficulty in balancing high demand with the limited capacity of preferred institutions.
