Cancún to host free environmental education event for vaquita marina conservation
Delphinus and the Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes de Benito Juárez will host a free environmental education event at Parque de las Palapas in Cancún on October 10, 2026. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the vaquita marina (Phocoena sinus), which is considered the most endangered marine mammal in the world.
The event, scheduled from 17:00 to 20:00, will feature interactive activities including games, crafts, and scientific outreach designed for children, youth, and adults. It is organized in conjunction with the International Day to Save the Vaquita to promote knowledge of Mexico's endemic species.
The vaquita marina is native exclusively to the Upper Gulf of California. Conservationists estimate that only between 7 and 15 individuals remain in the wild, primarily due to incidental capture in gillnets used in illegal fishing. While the species faces a critical survival scenario, recent monitoring has shown positive signs, such as the presence of calves and evidence of reproduction.
