Cancún tourism sector announces major expansion and investment initiatives

The 38th edition of the Cancún Travel Mart concluded with preliminary sales projections between $5.2 billion and $5.45 billion for the 2026-2027 period. The event, which hosted 566 delegates from 22 countries, highlighted a growing trend toward luxury and diversified tourism experiences.

To bolster the region, Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama announced a 20% increase in tourism promotion budgets for 2027, shifting focus from traditional ‘sun and beach’ models to include wellness, digital nomads, sports, and cultural tourism. Infrastructure and connectivity improvements are also underway, including a new road distributor on Kukulcán Boulevard and expanded flight connectivity from Canada, the United States, and Europe, including a new direct route from Milan to Cozumel.

Local authorities in Benito Juárez have launched the ‘Renueva Cancún’ program, which eliminates municipal remodeling license fees to incentivize hotel modernization. Additionally, new circular economy strategies are being implemented to manage waste, with plans to scale glass recycling from 40 to 500 tons per month through new collection centers.
