Cancun dolphins remain in captivity after Ventura Park closure

The Ventura Park dolphinarium in Cancun closed on 28 January 2025, but the nine resident dolphins – Solei, Oceanía, Mincho, Diego, Squalo, Flex, Apolo, Solomon and Satu – continue to be held by Dolphin Discovery. After the closure, the Mexican environmental authority PROFEPA assumed responsibility for daily veterinary care, water‑quality monitoring and health oversight while an administrative procedure proceeds.

Environmental groups warn that the animals, many over 30 years old, suffer chronic health problems and stress from prolonged confinement. Rumors of euthanasia have been refuted, with officials confirming ongoing medical attention. A Change.org petition, now with more than 8,000 signatures, urges the relocation of the dolphins to sea‑water enclosures on Isla Mujeres or Cozumel, requesting action from SEMARNAT, PROFEPA, the Quintana Roo government and Dolphin Discovery. Authorities note the dolphins are in stable condition but continue to monitor their health closely.
