Cancun marks Founder’s Day, highlighting 56 years of tourism growth

On July 13, municipal officials in Cancun held a ceremony to commemorate the city’s Founder’s Day, raising the municipal flag in Plaza de la Reforma. Speakers included Landy Guadalupe Canché Pantoja, mayoral chief Nora Viviana Espinoza Hernández, and former mayor Carlos Cardín Pérez, who stressed the city’s evolution from a 1970 planned settlement to a leading tourism engine for Mexico and the Caribbean.

Cancun today is a major resort destination, anchored by the 22‑km Hotel Zone and beaches such as Playa Delfines, Playa Tortugas, and Playa Chac Mool. Visitors also explore nearby Mayan archaeological sites and cenotes, making the city a mix of leisure, culture, and natural attractions that drives significant foreign‑exchange earnings for the country.
