Cancun, Mexico’s Engineered Tourist City Shows Rapid Resort Growth

Cancun was transformed from an untouched fishing village into a purpose‑built tourist hub after the Mexican government partnered with private investors in the late 1960s. Using a mainframe computer, planners evaluated climate, water quality, access and growth potential before selecting the site. Architect Agustín Landa Verdugo designed a master plan that laid out a long hotel strip, airport, roads, utilities and sewage treatment, all financed with international loans and state funds. Development officially began on 23 January 1970, when only three people inhabited the future hotel island.

Today Cancun is one of Mexico’s top destinations, contributing to the country’s ranking as the world’s sixth‑most visited nation with 45 million tourists last year. The city now hosts a range of upscale all‑inclusive family resorts, including Moon Palace The Grand, Hilton Cancun, and Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach, offering extensive amenities such as private beaches, kids’ clubs, water sports and spa services.
