Cancun security cameras vandalized on Kukulcan Boulevard
High-resolution intelligent security cameras and panic buttons installed along Kukulcan Boulevard in Cancun were recently vandalized. The equipment was placed at 42 public transport boarding and disembarking points to enhance safety in the hotel zone.
Ricardo Archundia Sanchez, head of the Quintana Roo Tourism Infrastructure Institute (Infratur), reported that the perpetrators were identified using the very surveillance system they attacked. Among those detained were a construction worker and a person experiencing homelessness. While the damaged equipment has been replaced, the exact cost of the damage is still being determined by authorities.
Security experts noted that these are not conventional cameras but high-end intelligent devices. Each unit costs approximately 600,000 pesos (around 30,000 USD) and features a range of up to three kilometers, capable of identifying faces or license plates from 1.5 kilometers away. The acquisition of these specific devices was supported by private sector intervention rather than the original C5 plan.
