Candida auris infections exceed 3,000 cases in U.S., CDC reports

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that, as of July 18, 2026, more than 3,000 clinical cases of the drug‑resistant fungus Candida auris have been identified across the United States. The count stands at 3,130 cases in 23 states according to most reports, while a separate preliminary release cites 3,437 cases in 27 states, adding California with 873 cases. Texas has the highest tally with 706 infections, followed by Michigan (503) and Illinois (366).

The infections are concentrated in hospitals, long‑term acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and other health‑care settings, affecting patients with invasive devices such as catheters, ventilators or feeding tubes. Healthy individuals outside these settings are not considered at meaningful risk. Laboratory analysis shows that over 95% of isolates are resistant to fluconazole, about 15% resist amphotericin B, roughly 1% resist echinocandins, and fewer than 1% are resistant to all three major antifungal classes.

Although the total number of cases continues to rise each year, the CDC notes that the annual growth rate has slowed since 2022, with the 2026 figure essentially unchanged from the same point in the previous year.
