Candle of Gratitude monument honors Moldovan heritage in Soroca
The Candle of Gratitude, a symbolic monument located on a cliff overlooking the Dniester River near Soroca, serves as a tribute to Moldova’s cultural heritage. Conceived by writer Ion Druță, the monument honors anonymous creators, specifically the unknown author of the folk ballad ‘Miorița’.
Designed by architect Ion Pascal and inaugurated on March 27, 2004, the structure is built from Cosăuți stone and stands nearly 30 meters tall. It features a five-meter metal flame at its peak and contains a small internal chapel for prayer and reflection. Visitors can access the monument and its viewing platform by climbing 656 steps from the riverbank, offering panoramic views of the Dniester Valley.
