Canela and Cachoeirinha, Brazil, activate emergency shelters amid severe rainstorm
In the city of Canela, municipal authorities mobilised a task‑force during the early hours of 29 April, joining the local Civil Defense, the Military Fire Department and city secretaries. The coordinated response provided immediate assistance, distributing emergency tarps for homes hit by hail, registering requests for roof tiles, addressing flood‑related incidents in neighbourhoods such as Jardim das Fontes, São Lucas, Saiqui, Boeira, Chacrão and São José, and continuing technical inspections throughout the day.
In nearby Cachoeirinha, the mayor’s office kept two 24‑hour tents open for the week, located at Avenida General Flores da Cunha, 96 (Carlos Wilkens) and Rua Barão de Cotegipe, 222 (Parque da Matriz). Staff at the tents advise residents on flood‑prevention measures, field emergency calls and share contact numbers for Civil Defense (WhatsApp), the municipal guard, the fire department and the military police.
