Brazilian cities expand waste collection and recycling programs

Municipalities across Brazil are scaling up solid‑waste initiatives. In Canela, an extra "Bota‑Fora" operation on 4 July will collect bulky items such as furniture, appliances and electronic waste from the Santa Marta and São José neighborhoods. During the Parintins Festival, the "Recicla Galera" program diverted more than 14 tonnes of recyclable material, exceeding its target by 19 percent and generating income for local recyclers. Recife’s São João 2026 event featured a temporary recycling centre that processed 4.29 tonnes of recyclables and removed 117.8 tonnes of overall waste. Ouro Preto’s "Tchau, Tranqueira" service has already collected over 50 tonnes of bulky waste through more than 650 scheduled pickups. In Marechal Cândido Rondon, residents of sector 6 were asked to deposit branches, debris and rejects between 1‑5 July for collection starting 6 July, with a temporary ecopoint set up for the Expo Rondon. Guarulhos’ "Cata‑Tralha" operation scheduled trucks to pick up discarded furniture and appliances across twelve neighborhoods on 4‑5 July. These coordinated actions aim to improve urban cleanliness, promote recycling, and support informal waste‑picker communities.
