Canela begins offering Pneumo 20 vaccine to seniors aged 85+
The municipality of Canela has started distributing the 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Pneumo 20) to elderly residents aged 85 and older. The doses are being made available at local Basic Health Units (UBSs) following the vaccine's inclusion in the National Vaccination Calendar for the Elderly and the shipment of supplies by the federal government.
The vaccine protects against diseases caused by the pneumococcus bacterium, including pneumonia and meningitis. For individuals in this age group who have never received a dose of Pneumo 20, a single dose is administered. Those who have previously received other pneumococcal vaccines, such as the 13, 15, or 23-valent versions, will have their need for vaccination evaluated on an individual basis.
Local epidemiological surveillance officials highlighted the importance of this campaign due to high mortality rates from pneumonia among those over 85. To receive the vaccine, eligible seniors must present an official identification document, such as an RG or CNH, at a municipal vaccination site; a medical prescription is not required.
